In India, Ayurvedic medicine is as important as orthodox medicine. It aims to treat the whole body using a holistic approach to maintain a balance between the physical, mental and spiritual. Massage has always been a major aspect of every day life and young children are taught various massage techniques to help family members. Over the centuries various practitioners have recognised and used the benefits of this ancient therapy. Today, in the West it is known as Indian Head and Shoulder Massage.
This therapy concentrates on the head, shoulders and upper torso with light massage and acupressure. The light stimulation quickly relieves all tension in the head, neck and shoulders, giving relief from migraine, eyestrain, tension and stress. The whole body relaxes as a result of the tension being lifted from the head and shoulders. Therefore, this is an ideal therapy for taking away the stresses and strains of everyday life in the hectic world we live in. The therapy improves the skin tone, reduces tension in the muscles, improves circulation, helps to improve the lymphatic circulation and therefore removes excess fluid and waste from cells, and also promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety and therefore aids sleep.
Head and shoulder massage uses several techniques of application; acupressure, hand therapeutic hand movements and massage, to create the full massage. These techniques are repeated throughout the therapy to obtain the full application for the client. The head and shoulder massage is carried out over light clothing whilst the client is sat on a comfortable chair.
