Numerology is the name given to an ancient method of studying numbers that has been used for thousands of years. It is used to give an insight into people's personalities and their motivation in life. It is an ancient science that is used to analyse people's characters.

The most popular form of numerology used today is based on the work of Pythagoras, the famous Greek mathematician and philosopher who lived during the 6th century B.C. It was Pythagoras's belief that numbers were the first of all things in nature. It was his belief that numbers were the basis of everything, in the natural, spiritual and scientific world. He believed that everything could be reduced to mathematical terms and that everything had a numerical value. Through studying the world in numerical form, he sought to achieve greater understanding of the world he lived in. Pythagoras, who believed that numbers created order and beauty, founded a school for students to follow his philosophy, and, this was known as the Italic or Pythagorean School. Pythagoreans believed that numbers could represent religious and holy things, for example, one represented unity (and therefore God), two was duality (the Devil) and four was a sacred and holy number on which they could swear oaths. Numbers are also thought to represent the planets and elements, one represented the sun, two the moon, five was fire, six stood for the earth and eight represented the air. Pythagoras also discovered that there was a relationship between sound and numbers, and developed this discovery to form his metaphysical concept.

Numerologists believe that the numbers one to nine have specific characteristics, and these characteristics are the basis of making an analysis of a person's character. The numbers have different characteristics and therefore have different influences on the characters and personalities of individuals.
