Elaine studied Speech Therapy with the British School of Yoga and gained a diploma with an A pass level.
Speech Therapy is given to all ages whether it be a child or an adult with a speech impediment i.e. stuttering, or someone recovering from a trauma of some kind like a stroke, where the patient has to learn to speak all over again.
In normal speech, the vocal cords are brought together by several pairs of muscles so that they touch each other very gently. The person then builds up air pressure beneath them by exhaling. When the air pressure becomes great enough, it blows the vocal cords apart, which sets them vibrating and makes sound. The sound is the raw material for speech production and it is converted into speech by movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, palate and other articulators.
Research has shown however, that in people who stutter, for some reason, the vocal cords press together so forcefully that the air required for speaking cannot pass. This explanation, which once seemed outlandish, has been substantiated repeatedly by investigators who are in agreement that, the physical source of all stuttering is a locking of the vocal cords. However, this still does not leave us with a clear understanding of how the locking of the vocal cords can lead to the wide variety of speech struggles that have been observed in those who stutter.
With patience most people who stutter can overcome their impediment by visiting a speech therapist. It's a well known fact that some people who struggle to speak don't have any bother at all if they sing the words.
Elaine's own mother-in-law had to learn to walk and talk after suffering a stroke. This happened before Elaine was qualified so, between visits to the therapist she helped her to learn to speak again.
Since then Elaine was so impressed with the Therapist that she studied Speech Therapy herself.
